Portsmouth Citadel Band is one of the oldest and most well known corps bands within the Salvation Army. Under the leadership of Bandmaster John Hanchett, the present band are well aware of their great heritage and give thanks to God for the way the band has been used in the past, and is committed to maintain the traditions and standards of Portsmouth Citadel Band.
Portsmouth Citadel Band takes an active role in the corps mission to spread the news of the love of Jesus Christ to the surrounding community. The band regularly features at many high profile city events and has toured the UK extensively. The band has also had the opportunity to tour Europe and the USA on several occasions.
The past year has presented many exciting opportunities for the band, including a concert with Stuart Townend and Lou Fellingham in Brighton (video below), and participating in the Big Church Day Out, the biggest one-day Christian event in the UK, alongside such artists as Graham Kendrick, Matt Redman, TobyMac, Israel Houghton, and the King’s Chamber Orchestra.
Portsmouth Salvation Army Band currently has 37 members led by Hanchett and is continuing to grow. The band’s members are first and foremost committed Christians who wish to use their musical gifts to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ .The band has a large number of young people which enhances the energy and vitality of the band.
